Can you believe it’s been 20 whole years since Andie Anderson and Ben Barry burst into our lives and had us all singing ‘You’re So Vain’ to each other?
Well, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey can’t believe it either! The How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days stars reunited during an Instagram live to reflect on the beloved 2003 rom-com and to answer fan questions about the film.
“I think it’s so amazing,” Kate says. “We got lucky to be in such a classic one you know.”
The pair chat about the younger generation of fans who are watching it for the first time – and loving it like the rest of us oldies – the chemistry they have on screen, as well as some of their most memorable moments on set:
“Underneath, probably for things that were happening in character and out of character and off set, we’d gotten under each other’s skin a little bit,” Matthew says of the famous ‘You’re So Vain’ scene.
“We were legitimately kind of pissed off at each other, in a really cool way,” he laughs.
Kate goes on to say that the one question she gets asked most about the film is, what was it like kissing Matthew McConaughey?
“My whole thing is, we’re always in weird environments,” she explains of being on set.
“When you’re kissing in a movie, it’s professional. We’re actually trying to create something that evokes something in a certain way that might not exactly be the way you would necessarily do it in real life.”
Kate clarifies that they do “kiss nicely” to which Matthew agreed.
The pair also talked about going beyond what they’re given in the script:
“I think maybe it has something to do with our freedom,” Kate says. “I feel like we’re both very free. We don’t constrict outselves to an idea of what we’re ‘supposed’ to be doing. There’s something spontaneous about the way we were able to work together. When you went one direction, I went with you – but then I would be like, ‘I’m gonna throw him off a little bit. Let’s see what happens if I do a sharp right!’”
“We were constantly jousting,” Matthew laughs.
